About
Rapid Bay
Rapid Bay is a peaceful seaside village, 90 minutes south of Adelaide, nestled
between towering cliffs and a long sandy bay. Home of the rare Leafy Sea
Dragon, this peaceful holiday town is renowned for fishing, diving and water
sports.
A pristine sandy beach leads to a jetty at the western end, and Constitution
Hill and a cave at the eastern end. There are sweeping views for those
energetic enough to climb Constitution Hill - and the clear, aqua waters below
are safe for swimming, boating and kayaking.
Originally a town built to accommodate BHP miners, today peaceful Rapid Bay is
home to a small community of residents and holiday makers. Back in 1830,
Colonel William Light carved his initials in a boulder here after stepping
ashore from the HMS Rapid.
In 2002, the HMAS Hobart was scuttled off Rapid Bay, bringing divers and
snorkelers from all over the world to dive the calm waters, and view a wealth
of marine life including sea lions and the rare and beautiful Leafy Sea Dragon.
Beyond Rapid Bay, there are nearby golf courses, national parks, boat ramps,
ferries to Kangaroo Island, and Victor Harbor is only a 30 minute drive away.
The Fleurieu Peninsula is also home to an amazing selection of wine and local
produce, with a range of eating options in towns close to Rapid Bay. Further
afield, the McLaren Vale wine region is a short 45 minute drive away with its
vast array of wineries, restaurants and galleries.
Latest News!
The old Rapid Bay jetty which was a major drawcard for fishermen and
divers was closed in 2003 because of structural instability.
As reported in the 'Sunday Mail' on 25th May 2008, a new 260m
long, $3.9 million jetty will be constructed 30m off of the original providing
access to this renowned diving and fishing region. The new jetty will be custom
designed for fishing and diving including a wide set of stairs allowing divers
to pass each other. The stairs will also feature extra deep steps to
accommodate fins and will have a platform half-way for rests.
The jetty could be open for business by the end of 2008 and is a welcome return
of a much missed recreational facility at Rapid Bay providing and
immense social and economic benefit to the Fleurieu Peninsula region and
SA. The original jetty will be left as it is to maintain and protect the
resident marine life.
